The 70 year old trainer

After last weeks article caused a bit of a stir- all good by the way, I thought now would be a great time to follow it up.

This should fall perfectly into place and hopefully help my little expression of opinion last week make a little more sense.

In case you missed it- check it out here-http://www.bootcampking.com/2011/12/06/how-to-confuse-your-clients

What I was basically saying was that if you want to create a BUSINESS- something that makes money when YOU aren’t there on a regular basis, you need to stop trying to be ‘everything to everybody’.

Belive it or not, I’m not saying theres a right or wrong here, I’m simply stating my opinion and that of most of the super successful fitness professionals I’ve been lucky enough to work with.

Of course, I’m trying to help you guys out and hook you up with some knowledge bombs too! (as well as the occasional f-bomb too

Anyway, I wanted to talk to you about the 70 year old trainer.

It might seem a bit stupid or even premature to talk about this subject when you’re having so much fun helping people get in shape and feel awesome but its important that you start thinking about it NOW.

This was actually the topic of my lecture at fitness entrepreneur bootcamp last year too

Question for you:

‘What are you going to do when you’re 70?”

You can switch off now and think “ I’m not bothered, I’m only young, I’ve just started out, blah blah blah’

I would have thought the same just last year actually!

Still here?

Good.

Now answer honestly- what the f*ck are you going to do when you’re 70?

Because wether you like it or not, and wether  you’re bothered or not you need to think about it.

Right now, most fit pros are quite simply swapping money for time.

There- I said it.

Most of you dont have a business YET (hopefully this piece will help you create something better)

You probably have a JOB.

You get paid when you work.

Sure its an AMAZING job right?

Thres NOTHING like the feeling you get from changing people lives.

I’ve been training people for 11 years now and still the buzz is incredible.

HOWEVER.

What about holiday pay? Sick pay? Maternity pay? Paternity pay? Pension?

Got your attention yet?

What if someone you loved got really sick (or you got really sick?)

What happens if you need to take 6 months off?

Doesn’t bare thinking about does it?

I’ve been there, again just 12-18 months ago I was the same.

Then my wife got pregnant.

I didn’t want to spend all day every day training people.

I wanted to be able to do what I wanted and still get paid

I wanted to be able to spend time with my little boy and still get paid.

I wanted to have something I could sell EVENTUALLY.

Look at your fitness business right now.

Do you have anything to sell? Or just a list of clients?

Do you have anything that I could invest in?

Or are you just a GREAT trainer? If you’re reading this then you ARE AN AWESOME trainer.

But you can’t sell that.

You cant bottle that (imagine if you could)

Right now, I’m assuming you eat live and breathe fitness?

But something that strikes me a lot is how much stuff we have to give up to have a successful ‘business’

Sleep? Hobbies? Sports? Time with friends? Time with family?

Even our own health sometimes!! We’re so bust helping other that we don’t have the time or energy to help ourselves right?

BUT I LOVE MY JOB PAUL!!!

YES I HEAR YOU! Loud and clear. I love mine too. The best trainers in the industry do. But they have a clearer plan.

I’m lucky enough to be friends with some of them.

Success leaves clues.

All you have to do is follow them

So with January just around the corner, what can YOU CHANGE about your business so you create a REAL business?

Heres some tips

1-    akin to last week- Do LESS stuff, BETTER than ANYONE else.

2-    In fact, pick ONE thing and decide to attempt to be WORLD CLASS at it.

3-    ‘Fitness’ Doesn’t count. That’s vanilla, that’s how to ‘blend in’. That’s NOT how to create a real business- IN MY OPINION.

4-    Develop something UNIQUE- get into a niche- the tighter the better.

5-    de-personalize it. Come up with a ‘system’ such as my ‘unstoppable-fat-loss-formula’. Then its not about you. It’s the SYSTEM that gets the results- and it doesn’t really matter who delivers it.

6-    KEEP GETTING BETTER at the ONE THING you choose to be world class in.

7-    Listen to me.

You know that I have more than 30 camps in 19 different locations and 4 different countries. You know I can do what I want, when I want. You know I live in spain, you know I speak at the worlds biggest fitness convesntion. You know I get insane results. Just sayin. Listen I HATE blowing my own trumpet- contrary to popular belief, but I want to HELP YOU- I write these articles for free. I give LOTS of free advice. Do me a favour, just follow it :-)

8- BIGGIE- be accountable.. my big moment was when i booked a 5 week honeymoon this year- no phone, no email… if i didn’t create the systems- i wouldn’t get paid for being ‘off’.

try that on for size ;-)
